Both sit near pH 7 to 8, and neither carries the builders that push wash water alkaline. Avoid powders, oxygen bleach, and anything labeled "with bleach alternative".
The sequence
Wash only after the print has fully oxidized, which takes at least a day in the dark.
- Let the print sit 24 to 48 hours in a drawer after the final rinse. The blue is still turning in that window.
- Rinse in cool water, roughly 20 C (68 F), until the runoff stops carrying a yellow-brown tint. That tint is unreacted iron leaving the cloth.
- Wash with a small dose of detergent: one teaspoon per gallon in a bucket, or the delicate cycle on a cold, gentle machine wash with low spin.
- Rinse again in distilled water when your tap water is hard. Phoenix water quality reports typically list hardness between 9 and 14 grains per gallon. At that level the tap rinse leaves calcium behind.
- Hang dry in shade. Direct sun keeps exposing the fabric and shifts the pale margins.
- Keep the first three washes out of mixed laundry. Loose dye from a dark load will tint a pale blue print.

Where judgement replaces the recipe
The recipe stops at the detergent dose. Three variables take over: water hardness, fabric weight and how heavy the coating was. Cotton canvas coated thickly holds iron salts longer than a thin coat on silk or linen blend. A tight weave also rinses slower than a loose one. Use tap water for the first rinse, where volume does the work, and distilled for the last one, where residue would stay.

How to tell it is right
Three checks settle it. Squeeze the wet fabric over a white plate; the drops should be clear, not tea colored. Look at the unexposed border; it should read pale blue, not yellow-green. Fixing it when it is not
The common failure is a first wash that strips the blue to a flat gray. Alkaline detergent, water above 40 C (104 F), and a long heavy spin will each do it. While the fabric is still damp, soak it for 2 to 5 minutes in one part drugstore 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to three parts cool water. Rinse in distilled water, then dry in shade. Peroxide re-oxidizes the iron and pulls the blue back toward Prussian blue.
