Screen printing at home without emulsion
No darkroom, no diazo emulsion, no exposure unit. A vinyl stencil turns an empty frame into a working tool in about twenty minutes.
The trade off is resolution, because vinyl holds clean shapes down to roughly 1 to 2 mm. Hairline serifs and fine halftone dots will not survive weeding.

Cutting and weeding the stencil

- Weed the counters and islands with a hook tool under a bright lamp.

Adhering the stencil to the mesh

Burnish with a hard roller or a plastic card for a minute from the print side. Flip the screen and burnish the mesh side too, pressing the adhesive into the threads.
Tape newsprint to a board and pull one test print. If ink creeps past the lines, lift the stencil, wipe the mesh with isopropyl alcohol, and burnish again.
Fabric inks and drying time
Water-based fabric ink from Speedball, Jacquard or Permaset Aqua sits on top of the cotton and dries by evaporation. Plastisol sits as a plastic film and only cures under heat.

Humidity and mesh count both move screen printing fabric ink drying time. A 110 mesh lays a heavier deposit and needs longer than a 156 mesh. Keep a heat gun nearby to flash each color before the next one.
Curing methods for a home setup
A domestic iron set to cotton, with parchment between iron and print, will heat set water-based ink in a few minutes. It will not cure plastisol.
For short runs, an iron on the reverse side works. For anything you plan to sell, a heat press gives even pressure and a repeatable temperature. A laser thermometer tells you what the ink film reaches, and that reading is the number that matters.
Example: six cotton totes in one evening
Cut one 10 by 12 inch stencil from a single sheet of Oracal 651 and weed it in about fifteen minutes. Tape it to a 110 mesh screen, burnish, and pull the first tote. Print all six with a 70 durometer squeegee and a medium flood, then flash each bag for 30 seconds with a heat gun.
Where a home setup can grow

Common questions
Can I reuse a vinyl stencil?
Yes. Keep it on the screen, wipe ink off with a damp cloth, and it will survive a short run. Edges lift once ink builds up under them, so check the stencil after every ten pulls.
Does this work on polyester?
Water-based ink on polyester often needs a lower cure temperature and a catalyst additive. Test a scrap before printing a whole order.
How long before a shirt can be washed?
Let the ink air dry fully and heat set it, then wait a day before the first wash. Cold water, inside out, no fabric softener.
Do I need a heat press to start?
No. An iron and parchment will heat set water-based ink on cotton. A press earns its place once you print more than a handful at a time.
